The Dark Side of Workouts; Uncensored Podcast

In today’s uncensored podcast John and Brad will speak to us about Exercise-Induced Rhabdomyolysis.

John and Brad speak to us about Exercise-Induced Rhabdomyolysis

John and Brad speak to us about Exercise-Induced Rhabdomyolysis

General adaptation response is a normal part of working out, but if exercise is taken to the extreme you can go into Rhabdomyolysis. Normal exercise is just enough to have general adaptation response. It’s important to realize that muscle building and fat loss happens in short consistency over time. It can’t be done too fast.

There is some glorification regarding extreme exercise exertion and exhaustion and even Rhabdomyolysis, but this is a serious condition that can be fatal.

Rhabdomyolysis, with aliases such as “Rhabdo” & “Uncle Rhabdo” is a rampant problem, at least in the CrossFit community.

CrossFitters, largely unaware of the rhabdo risk, will continue to charge ahead, pressured and happily coerced into exercising to depletion and exhaustion.

“Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown

of muscle fibers resulting in the release of

muscle fiber contents (myoglobin)

into the bloodstream.”

Since I’ve been a part of the AGR community and lived the Adonis lifestyle for the past four years, I realize you don’t have to exercise to an extreme to lose fat and attain “Golden Measurements.”  With much less effort, you can transform from “Average Joe  to Cover Model Pro.”   Our former Adonis Transformation Contest winners have proven that time and time again.

While the allure of extreme workouts done together in a team environment may seem appealing, do no allow your goals to become hi-jacked!

The AGR philosophy is “Targeted Muscle Building and Fat Burning for the Perfect Physique.”  There is no need get extreme.

In fact too much strenuous exercise can decrease your leptin levels, hindering your ability to lose fat, increase your hunger, and make you feel fatigued and lethargic.

Our workout and nutrition programs are designed to  provide a sustainable active lifestyle that can be followed for the long term.  Of course you will have days you don’t feel like working out, we all have those days, but remember our goal is to STIMULATE not ANNIHLATE you with exercise.

Traditional Bodybuilding Approach vs. Reverse Taper Dieting

Here’s the next episode of the UNCENSORED Podcasts Season 3.

Traditional Bodybuilding Approach vs. Reverse Taper Dieting

Whether you Forward Taper or Reverse Taper to achieve your final look. Rest assured there's some hard work and effort involved.

Whether you Forward Taper or Reverse Taper to achieve your final look. Rest assured there’s some disciplinek and effort involved. Are you working SMARTER or HARDER?

Today’s podcast with John Barban and Brad Pilon compares the two dieting styles of traditional bodybuilding’s  “Forward Tapering” to the Adonis approach of “Reverse tapering.”  The key discussion points of the podcast were provided via a research paper studying natural bodybuilders preparing for an upcoming competition. Other items of interest that were measured caloric intake, exercise time, body fat levels, hormonal levels, etc.

The data from the research paper on the bodybuilders was fairly comparable to the data submitted by our prior Adonis Transformation Winners.

Traditional Bodybuilding Approach

“Forward Tapering”  is when you begin dieting at a HIGHER calorie level and continually DECREASE your calorie intake as you get leaner.

This is the traditional bodybuilding approach to preparing for competitions.  Most contest prep plans span between 12-20 weeks.  The goal is for the bodybuilder or competitor to “peak” or look their very best on the day of the show.  There are several tricks a person can perform to hit their “peak” or final look.  It normally begins with drastically cutting calories and increasing their cardio to resulting in depleted glycogen and fat levels.  More advanced preps might include sodium loading/depletion, water and/or carbohydrate cycling.

However most of these efforts are short-lived and hard to maintain because the effort it took to achieve that look is not easily sustained.  Unfortuately, if a competitor does not have a post-contest gameplan they are at risk of  the dreaded “post-contest rebound.”  Some have even ended up looking worse than before they started their prep.

Reverse Taper Dieting

“Reverse Tapering”  is the OPPOSITE,  you begin dieting at a LOWER calorie level and continually INCREASE your calorie intake as you get leaner.

This Adonis Lifestyle approach is SIMPLE, but it’s not EASY.  It requires discipline upfront, when there is no deadline looming in front of you.  Your hard work is done in the begining and provides more room for you to make adjustments as you progress in your transformation.  The Reverse Taper  approach also focuses more on  calorie deficit through eating LESS food as opposed to eating MORE food and doing MORE exercise.

It’s Not a Competition, It’s a Lifestyle

Most people who would be opposed to this approach simply have to win the “mental” battle in their mind to believe that this process is more efficient and sustainable.  If they trust the process they can avoid the longer exercise periods needed to create a caloric deficit with the traditional bodybuilder approach.

John and Brad truly deliver in this podcast, discussing the in’s and out’s of the “Fitness Competitor” lifestyle.  In conclusion, both of these approaches have proven results.  But the question you must ask yourself, are you working SMARTER or HARDER towards the pursuit of you fitness goals?

If You Want to Change Your Shape, You Need to Change Your Life: Uncensored Podcast

Here’s the next episode of the UNCENSORED Podcasts Season 3.

If You Want to Change Your Shape, You Need to Change Your Life

Any time is a good time to start your fitness goals, but the New Year is a common time to start. The most important thing is that you are making a LONG TERM lifestyle change. If you are going to make this step, it’s going to take a shift in the way you live your life.

Welcome to February 2014!  The crowded gyms filled with New Year’s Resolutioner’s are beginning to dwindle down in occupancy.  Hopefully, with the help of the Adonis Community you will remain motivated and steadfast in the pursuit of your goals.   Any time is a good time to start your fitness goals, but the new year is a common time to start.

Some people show up in January hoping it will all be done in February, but it just does not work that way does it?  The problem with this mentality is that it is not life changing.  Real change requires you to change your habits for life.  You can’t just fix everything in one month and go back to the way you were living your life that got you overweight and out of shape in the first place.

The most important thing is that you are making a LONG TERM lifestyle change.

If you are going to make this step, it’s going to take a shift in the way you live your life.

The first 21 days are the toughest, it’s the habits you develop here that eventually become the way you live your life.  These habits over time are performed with less effort as it becomes familiar and more natural to you.

Why is exercise is important?  Not only is it healthy for you, it provides structure – like a steering wheel – it creates a mindset for changing your body.  It adds purpose to your day, giving you something to strive for. Proper exercises accompanied with good food choices adds incentive to see results quickly.

The habits of good diet and exercise build upon each other, creating a snowball effect and your progress accelerates as your quality of life increases.

DIET (two diets):  Diet from food and diet from fitness media (limit your reading of fitness media).

Be patient because it won’t happen as fast as you want it to, but patience is what will finally bring you the results.

Today John and Brad talk about the Adonis philosophy of weight loss and how to change your shape for life.

Why Right Now Is the Best Time to Lose Fat – Uncensored

Learn the effects of our modern North American Culture on fat loss and take corrective action the Adonis Golden Ratio System.

Learn the effects of our modern North American Culture on fat loss and take corrective action using the Adonis Golden Ratio System. Continue reading to learn more about the experiment you never want to be in!

The experiment you don’t ever want to be in!

John and Brad are going to talk about an experiment you never want to be part of.  Yet it’s exactly what our modern North American society unknowingly engages in and is why our society is becoming obese.

The study was done in Quebec in the late 1980’s. The subjects consisted of 24 sets of male twins with ages ranging from 18-27. They were sequestered in a university dorm for 120 days.  The experiment was to see what happens when you overeat by 1000 calories a day.   During this time they were not allowed to train -they were only allowed to walk for 30 minutes a day – supervised.  They only ate the food they were provided in a very controlled environment.

They were young men in very good shape.  Their average body fat went from 11.3% body fat up to 18% body fat by the end of the experiment.  The average waist size increased from 29.5” to 33”.

The average fat gained was 18 pounds, the fat weight gained ranged from 9.5 pounds to 30 pounds.  The twins in each pair had similar gains.  Everyone gained fat.

Why did some gain more than others?

Metabolism was the pretty much the same for all.

There was a fair relationship with testosterone preventing some fat gain – just a little.

Cardio training seems to help prevent future fat gain

Those that gained the least amount of fat were in the bestVO2 max cardio shape at the beginning of the experiment.  Remember they did not train during the experiment.

The cardio fitness has lasting effects; it seems to prevent or protect against weight gain.  Cardio doesn’t seem to affect actual fat loss much, but it seems to help prevent the gaining of fat and be a sort of buffer or shield against future fat gain.

Research shows it only takes 6-8 weeks of cardio training for both the up regulation of Vo2 max and the muscle enzymes responsible for increasing their oxidizing potential (or ability to burn fat), after which they begin to plateau.  A good experiment could be to have a block of cardio included in your exercise routine every so often, especially as part of primer before starting a fat loss program.

The bottom line – take corrective action and the sooner the better!

The dark side of the experiment is that everyone gained fat.  None of them ever got back to the level of leanness that they were at before the experiment.  They continued to gain weight over five years and ended up being close to what they were at the end of the study.

The bottom line is that no matter when in your life you allow yourself to overeat and gain fat, if you never do a compensatory under eat to correct it will never go away.  Corrective action must be taken, the sooner the better.

Don’t ever stop training.  Don’t let your waist size increase much.

If you have corrective action to take – get serious about taking the corrective action as soon as possible.

Environmental Influencess: Uncensored Podcast with John and Brad

Here’s the next episode of the UNCENSORED Podcasts Season 3.

Environmental Influences

Adonis Origins-Rich Sigona

Adonis Legends: Rich Sigona
Rich is one of the original Adonis Transformation Contest winners. He’s learned to deal with the environmental influences during and after his transformation. Today, several years later, he still maintains the Golden lifestyle.

Your location and context are important to your success

People around you have a lot of influence in what you do.

Where you are is very important.

Who you are with is very important.

Are you at the gym?

Are you with people who encourage or discourage positive workout behavior?

Interaction with others to fit in with the group will affect your decisions.

Persecution regarding food is not about you. They are projecting their issues and insecurities on you.  The very fact that you are thinking about what you eat and consume is threatening to some people.

Negative comments are always really people making comments about themselves and their issues, not YOU.  The guy or gal on Facebook who says “Too much muscle!” or “Too skinny!” or whatever, it is really not about you.

You will get a lot of negative comments during your corrective action phase

“The correction” or corrective phase is what most will be commenting on.  This is the phase that requires serious effort – and is only necessary for the weight loss. The extreme corrective action is not forever.

It is not sustainable or you would go down to zero percent body fat.  At some point it must stop, because it’s corrective action.

Maintaining is less extreme than the “correction”.   When you maintain, you only need very short temporary corrective action for minor fat gains. Reigning in eating habits results in a journey back to a maintenance level.

Online writing is biased

Everyone has their issues.  It comes through in their writing. There is bias.  There are very few experts.  They explain to you their perspective as if everyone was like them.

So it’s not just friends, family, and people around you, it’s also the fitness writers online.  Even the researchers; they have a hope or bias that the outcome or answer will turn a certain way. They are trying to convince you that their issues are your issues.

Your life will change as you gain success

All of your relationships will change as you gain success and reach your goals. People will need to adjust to the new transformed person you have become. Some people are able to adjust, and some are not.  You will have to make decisions and evaluate all of your relationships.

You will be affected by jealousy and others who want your success.  This is what happens with any success.  The more success you have, the more your relationships all around you will change.

So the bottom line is that who you spend time with in your life as well as online will all affect your success.  They will also affect how well you keep your success.
