Dan has a great back!

Dan’s story of the 12 week contest is much different than past winners as he had many lifestyle obstacles to overcome as well as catching the flu right in the middle of the contest.

Flu or not, Dan persevered and pushed through it all and came out as the winner.

In this podcast we’ll talk about the challenges of working out when you’re sick, sticking to a commitment that you’ve made to yourself and the importance of social support and finding your motivation to move forward.

We also talk about the common mistakes guys make of trying to be bigger by overeating and ending up getting fat and in some cases giving up on the idea of ever actually getting in the shape they really want. This may have even crossed your mind, but Dan mentions the feeling of simply giving up on the idea that he could ever get into the shape he’s been working for over the past 15 years.

LISTEN:

Metabolic and Muscle Building Rates

When we speak of metabolism and metabolic rates, most people are not thinking of it in the correct terms.

Metabolic Rates

Our metabolic rate is traditionally referred to in terms of calories per day, but it might be more useful to actually consider how many calories you burn per hour.

If you think about how many calories you burn per hour, the amount of food you need to eat per meal, the number of meals you need to eat per day, and how far to space those meals apart starts to look much different.

Understanding the amount of calories your lean body mass and specifically your skeletal muscle mass burns will also help you understand how much food to eat in order to gain muscle and maintain it without gaining fat.

In most cases the amount of calories required for muscle gaining is grossly over estimated as well as the amount of calories your muscle can burn per hour.

Brad and Brad also touch on what goes on behind the scenes at a bodybuilding photoshoot and the fallacy of the big eaters in the muscle building industry.

The difference in metabolic rate from one person to the next can vary, but it won’t vary as much as you think.

The concept of fractional synthetic rate is also introduced and Brad explains it in the simplest terms possible (although this is still a bit sciency sounding…sorry, some of this stuff is just more complicated than other fitness marketers will have you believe)

Finally, viewing your metabolic rates in these new perspectives will help you understand what it really takes to build a lean muscular physique and avoid some major set backs of the traditional bodybuilding recommendations.

Orthorexia and Food Cults

Orthorexia is a term coined by a physician Dr. Steven Bratman. It’s defined as an unhealthy obsession with health food…ironic to say the least.

Food Cults

Some people end up worshiping at the alter of a new food cult without even realizing it.

Many people can fall victim to some degree of orthorexia as they search for the one ‘right’ way to eat, but each of these diets is nothing more than an unscientific fad that is more marketing and fear mongering than it is science.

Diet fads come and go and each one has it’s villian food and it’s hero’s all the way from it’s champion founder to the champion foods.

Low carb diets, blood type diets, raw foodies, macrobiotic, paleo and so on, each one will profess the merits of eating specific foods while removing many other foods from your diet for good. But is there really any proof that these diets can help you live healthier or longer or improve performance or the way you feel…or do anything at all?

In most cases these diets quickly become like a cult with all of the ugly consequences like becoming socially isolated from other people who are not part of the cult, the development of an elitist attitude about the given way of eating above any other form of eating and a general smugness of it’s followers as they assume they have become ‘enlightened’ to the one and only way to eat.

The reality is there is little if any scientific evidence to support any of these restrictive styles of eating. They are usually focused on minor and insignificant points about mixing and matching their ‘correct’ foods and miss the point of getting total calories under control and developing consistent exercise habits.

In todays uncensored podcast we’ll discuss orthorexia and food cults and how many of the diets that people read about and follow start to take over other parts of their lives.

We’ll also discuss how the champions of many of these cults don’t even follow their own recommendations.

Metabolic Flexibility

There are many different diet styles you can read about but most are very restrictive and teach an exclusionary style

Metabolic Flexibility

Metabolic Flexibility is something most of us don’t think about when we’re considering a diet plan of the concept of flexibility in general.

of eating. The typical marketing rhetoric finds one or two food groups or perhaps a macro nutrient (like carbs in the atkins approach) to demonize and lay all of the ills and evils of our western society on these few nutrients.

The dietary advice that follows is to cut all of said nutrient out of your diet forever.

This same tone is taking in blood type diets, or diets that purport the concept that a person has a ‘metabolic type’. These theories are great marketing speak but have no basis in physiology or science.

All humans are highly adaptable and can eat whatever foods happen to be available at a given time.

The concept that there is a right way to eat, or that you have a metabolic type is naive and a convenient argument to make in modern western affluent societies where you can just stroll down to the grocery store and decide on a whim that today you will be a protein eater!

Most people around the world do not have such a luxury and must eat what is available, and most cultures around the world have their fair share of vigorously healthy people as well and this is because of metabolic flexibility and adaptability.

Your body can learn to eat and function on whatever food you can give it. In our societies we have the good fortune to experiment with seemingly limitless food combinations and mix and match just about any degree of foods, meal timing and meal composition we wish.

In todays uncensored podcast we’ll explain how being metabolically flexible and adaptable is the real answer to long term health and part of what makes a diet program successful.

In today’s uncensored podcast, we’ll explain why getting locked into one way of eating can lead to inflexibility if you ever try to change that pattern, indeed it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy if you become too restrictive with your dietary patterns.

We’ll also explain how being metabolically flexible and adaptable is a much better answer for long term health and part of what makes a diet program successful.

Black and Grey Market Drugs

The market for supplements and drugs isn’t as black and white as you might think. There is also a significant ‘grey’

Steroids

At some point these items weren’t on the black market.

market of items that are not yet categorized as legal or illegal. In many cases a new and controversial supplement may technically be part of the grey market until it gains a working legal definition.

If you’ve been actively taking or trying supplements for the past 10 years you may very well have taken something that used to be part of the legitimate market and now exists on the grey market or even the black market now.

Many items go through a life cycle from the legitimate market to the grey market and end up in the black market.

The markets themselves are determined by political ideology and pressure and have little to do with the quality or inherent or perceived danger of the items in question.

We’ll look into the history of the black market for performance enhancing drugs and examine how a drug or supplement can start out as a legitimate market item and end up on the black market.

When you look at it from this standpoint you have to consider that being on an illegal drug is more a matter of a moment in time and a geographical location vs doing something that is universally right or wrong as the media would portray it.

Inflammation, Bodyfat, and Muscle Growth

This is the first uncensored Adonis Index podcast and today Brad Pilon and Brad Howard get into the specifics of inflammation, bodyfat, muscle growth, and working out.

Adonis Index

Frank Zane has “the look”

We know that as bodyfat increases so does systemic inflammation. It has been shown that bodyfat itself secretes inflammatory molecules and this is one of the reasons carrying excess bodyfat is a major risk factor for diabetes and heart disease, but what you didn’t know is that it may also kill your ability to gain muscle.

It could even be said that diabetes and cardiovascular disease are secondary diseases to being obese, and the extra body fat itself is causes multiple inflammatory problems all over your body.

Leptin became popular in the mid 90’s and early 2000’s as a potential target for a pharmaceutical solution to weight loss, but it failed to produced an answer.

Now we are discovering that leptin may be a signal of systemic and acute inflammation due to changes in both caloric intake and body fat levels.

In todays uncensored podcast Pilon will dig deep into his inflammation theory and tie in body fat, leptin, testosterone, calorie intake and inflammation and even vitamins and antioxidants. You may not have even consider this but a simple anti inflammatory might actually help with muscle building if you know what you’re doing, but if you take them incorrectly you could ruin the effect of your workout (this is based on the principle of hormesis).

The answer to muscle building and fat loss is multi factorial and this podcast will give you a taste of how many things that are really going on in your body when you’re trying to get a lean muscular physique. It’s just as straight forward as many people and marketers would have you think.

They discuss why there is a gap in muscle building research and why our culture of performance enhancing drug denial is keeping it that way.

You’ll also discover the chronic and acute effect of working out on inflammation and whether or not pre and post workout nutrition has a measurable positive effect on your workouts.
