Daniel’s Transformation Interview:

There I was the day after Christmas, 2011, at Gold’s gym doing my third set of front squats at a fast pace. It was part of a HITT protocol that used weight training and body-weight movements to get your heart rate up and keep it up. My cardiologist was all in favor since I had done a Bruce-protocol treadmill stress test for him the previous month and lasted fourteen minutes. The received wisdom is that if you can last longer than ten minutes, you are basically immune from heart attacks for the next five years. So it must have been my inner snowflake that got busy that day. When I came to and started talking to the nice young paramedic, he told me that I had blacked out and they had had to use paddles to get my heart restarted. The next week, after I got my very own implanted defibrillator, I started thinking about what I could do to avoid any repetition of training to near-death. I decided I would stop doing any routine that demanded HITT-type heart rates, and I thought that getting my BMI down from about 26 would help stave off future problems. When I was looking for a weight-loss program coupled with exercise, I ran across Eat Stop Eat and eventually the whole Adonis Golden Ratio program. I was attracted by the podcasts and the careful, explicit, science-based approach to weight loss and exercise that AGR uses. I was also impressed by the before and after photos that came with the podcasts.

I bought AGR 3.0 in June, 2012. I figured that since I was 68 years old at the time, a transformation would probably take more than twelve weeks; but to give myself a running start, I joined the transformation contest (AT 9) that started in August. I started the contest with a 34” waist and 46” shoulders at a height of 6’0” and an AI of 1.31. I ended it with golden waist, (32.1” but far from golden shoulders (~46” instead of the 52” I needed). My AI was at 1.43. I kept on working out and keeping track of things through AT 10 and 11. About one month into AT 11, I had my first-ever DEXA scan, and found out I carried 13.9% body fat. 14% fat!! 24 pounds of fat on my (I thought) skinny 174-pound frame!!  I had my second DEXA scan about six months later at the end of AT 12, confident in the fact that my AI was up somewhat (about 1.46), and I thought I looked better. Maybe I did, but my body fat was almost 1% higher, at 14.7%. I know that these are just numbers, but they clearly are not contest-winning numbers.

I consulted my inner snowflake and decided that if I couldn’t get an additional 5 inches of shoulder breadth, I would make my 47” shoulders golden with respect to a far slimmer waist – about 29” per my calculations. Although this was not my true golden waist with respect to my height, I thought I would see how I liked the look and made it my goal for AT 13.

I had also read that a reputable journal reported that muscle growth in men ~70 years old was significantly greater when they followed a regimen of six sets of a given exercise instead of the three sets that are usually sufficient for younger men. I do not think there is anything magic about six sets vice five, or seven, or eight; it is, however, the number of sets used in the study, so I evolved the following plan.

  • In order to lose more fat, I would use the AGR Nutrition calculator, and fudge the entry by making my waist measurement larger by the amount that my actual waist exceeded 29”. All other entries would be accurate
  • I would use AGR 3.0 and add a basic shoulder or chest booster every workout.
  • One extra set would be added to the exercises in AGR 3.0 that specified five sets.
  • If the shoulder or chest booster appeared to work one body part for six or more sets (e.g. dumbbell flyes for three sets and cable crossovers for four sets), the booster would be performed as written.
  • If no exercise in the boosters met this criterion, one of the supersets would be increased to six sets of the two exercises, with the other exercise being performed as indicated.

Basically this amounted to adding a maximum of one set to one exercise in the main workout and three sets to two exercises in the boosters per day. I found over the weeks that this was sustainable, and that I could do it without injury or excessive fatigue.

My DEXA scan on 4/13/2014 proved that my plan is working. My total body mass is down by 2.5 kilos since my last scan at the end of AT12. My total body fat is down to 12.5% from 14.7%. I have lost 2.4 kilos of fat and gained 1.6 kilos of muscle mass in my trunk alone, while adding ½” to my shoulders. (One downside: My legs have less muscle mass and a little more fat mass than before because I lowered the resistance on all of my lower body exercises to avoid joint pain.) My AI ratio has increased from 1.46 to 1.58 currently. I missed my 29” waist goal by about ½”, but that’s OK. The changes I see clearly are not happening at the same rate that younger men experience them, and more work remains to be done; but I have learned some patience over the years.

I’ve also learned the difference good photographs make. I have been working with a professional photographer friend of mine for the past three contests. He had never done physique photos before, but he paid attention and improved his technique with each contest. It helped, too, that as I leaned out, he could better see what I was looking for in the results. (PM me if you live in the Los Angeles area and would like to contact him.) I would also like to mention that the cost of becoming an immersion client was some of the best money I have ever spent.

In the coming weeks I plan to gradually increase my calories from slightly below maintenance to the point where my waist stays approximately golden while my shoulders and chest fill out. I will use the Muscle Building Foundation and increase the five-set elements to six sets. I’ll have another DEXA scan in about three months to see if I’m on track.

In the meantime, I have been getting some positive feedback from family and friends, and I like how I look at a 1.5+ AGR. Some of the guys at the gym (same gym for 5 years, same guys) have also commented on my new look and seem to be friendlier than before. My doctor says my blood work is remarkable for a man of my age; and I aced a recent treadmill test – not that that’s a huge comfort given my past experience. It’s been two and a half years since my episode, I’m fifteen pounds lighter, my BMI is at 23.6, and my defibrillator (which reports every night to my electrocardiologist – don’t ask, she’s a nice lady) has not had to kick in even once. I’m looking forward to having more time above ground to get to a true golden AI. In the meantime, I put every workout I finish in the win column; after all, I could have been done with any and all workouts on December 26, 2011.

Editor’s Note:

Hey Daniel,

Wow! Your story is most humbling.  It goes without saying that at 70 years young you have really raised the bar for us younger guys by achieving a Adonis Index Scores of 1.58!  I can think of a few  people including myself who want to be like you when we grow up! LOL

Patience is definitely a virtue and you have clearly demonstrated the AGR principles are timeless and you can strive for “Golden” even in your Golden years.  We look forward to hearing more updates from you in the future!

Hard Gainer U-Turns Onto Golden Way Drive: Interview with AT12 Winner Chad Frakes

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 12th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Chad Frakes,  who placed  1st in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Chad has been following the program since about April 2013.  He  competed in both contests AT11 & AT12.  He’s a great example of someone who may need to complete two transformation contests in order to achieve their “Golden” measurements.

Chad shares with us  his “Adonis Origins” images prior to the start of contest AT11.  See below:

“I have spent most of my life as a hard gainer, eating whatever I wanted. I was always motivated to train in order to put on size. But when it came to cutting the fat, I was clueless. I am truly blown away when I reflect back to the shape I was in prior to starting Adonis Golden Ratio Systems. “

Chad’s Transformation Essay:

I joined Adonis Golden Ratio in April 2013, and quickly put the AGR workouts to the test. Right away I felt great with having a laid out plan to follow, I have been working out for about 14 years. Having a detailed exercise program to follow was something new to me, I have always just done what ever exercise or muscle group I felt like doing that day, with no real plan. For the most part, I would do chest/tris, back/bis, legs/shoulders. Doing this type of routine would give me results, but never gave me a total body plan that was goal objective.

When I first started the program, Dieting was something I did not understand; I have been a hard gainer for most of my life, I was use to eating whatever and however much I wanted. Since I have gotten older and life less active that has changed for me. Once I started to gain fat I really didn’t know how to get rid of it, I just kept doing what I have done for years.

The past 12 weeks have been a great experience. There were some difficult times along the way, it is my experience that when I started AGR and only eating 1000 calories, this was easier for me then when I got leaner and was eating 2000 calories, it seems the leaner I got the more hunger there was. I encountered some resistance from friends and even my own girlfriend as I was getting leaner, they kept telling me I was getting too skinny, but I ignored them and kept on the path to  achieving the Golden ratio. I think most people are not use to seeing other people as lean as they should be really, but the stares I get in the gym told me I’m on track!

I kept things simple throughout my transformation, just followed RTD: Reverse Taper Diet, ate what I wanted within my calorie deficit, that’s it.

Thank you AGR systems, my new body has been achieved from the results of this program!

-Chad Frakes

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Chad,

Congratulations on making a successful transformation.  You stayed the course through BOTH AT11 & AT12 never losing sight of your goal.  I really enjoyed listening to your interview and the mindset you had to push pass barriers to get the results you were working for.  Your hard work has paid off and we look forward to featuring you as a “cover model” on some our upcoming workout programs.   Your “U-Turn” onto the Golden Way has been a tremendous success! News about Upcoming Events in the Adonis Community for 2014

News about Upcoming Events in the Adonis Community for 2014

PLAN AHEAD: 2014 marches on and it’s time to get ready for some exciting upcoming event in the Adonis Community

Count Down To AT13

The First Contest of the Year Starts on January 20, 2014

The next contest will be the Adonis Transformation Contest AT-13.  This starts on January 20, 2014 and will end on April 14, 2014

Contests are a great motivator for some people.  You can also “shadow” a contest which is not actually submitting an entry but following along during the same 12 weeks.

Many people use the online community for support during the contest, or during their “shadow contest”.

There are also many challenges created by community members; these are informal mini contests where Adonis community members pool together prizes and have fun cheering each other on.

Competition Amongst Contest Entries Has Been Fierce!

As more men enter the contests, the bar is getting set very high so think about entering a contest during a time of the year when you might be close to reaching your Adonis goals.  The contest judges will evaluate final entries based on the following factors:

1- Weight Loss (LBS)

2-  Adonis Golden Ratio (AGR)  Transformation Change

3-  Final AGR Score

4- Muscularity

5- Aesthetics/Photogenic Quality

The judges need to see these changes in the pictures so it’s important that both before and after pictures are in focus and taken at appropriate angles and with good lighting (selfies don’t do this well).  Take the time to to use a camera with a timer or have someone with a steady hand take the pictures.

We typically run three contests a year.  After AT-13 is complete there will be two additional contests this year:

AT-14 Starts May 12, 2014 and ends August 4, 2014

AT-15 Starts September 1, 2014 and ends November 24, 2014

Look forward to AT-12 interview podcasts in the weeks to come

In the upcoming weeks we can look forward to the Adonis Transformation Contest AT-12 interview podcasts being posted every Monday.  This is where we will hear the first hand stories from the winners and what helped them with their success.  We will hear about their struggles, lessons learned, obstacles overcome, and their words of wisdom.  For most of us these stories are very motivating. We can learn something new from each story.

Not only will you hear the motivating stories; John also includes tidbits of coaching and advice that pertain to the stories.  Usually we find this information reassuring or can use it to change our own strategy for success.

Look forward to a new workout of the month

You can look forward to seeing a new workout released each month.  We’ve got some really fun and interesting series coming out based on your continued requests and feedback.  It’s going to be an exciting year.

New Year,  Same Drive.  What keeps you motivated to achieve your goals?

This will be different for each person.  You may already know what keeps you motivated or you may need to experiment to find out.  Some people like our contests and others may like our fun community challenges.  Some may have a wedding or important life event to look forward to.  If you’re still searching for motivation to pursue your goals, here are some additional questions you may want to ask yourself:

Who do you know that can support you in making this transition to live a healthy and fit lifestyle?

What prompted you to want to make these changes?

When would you like to start this process and when do you expect to see results?

Where else have you looked for advice or found helpful information?

How do you think the transformation process will affect your current schedule and responsibilities?

One thing to keep in mind regarding support and  motivation is this year we have an Adonis meet up in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA planned.  As iron sharpens iron, there have been several long-lasting relationships developed within the Adonis Community.  This meet-up will be a great opportunity to enjoy in the camaraderie and fellowship of like-minded people.

Thanks for your Vote!

You may recall earlier last year that I was  nominated into the Top 20  as “Semi-Finalist” in the 2014 BodySpace Spokesmodel Search, hosted by Bodybuilding.com

I’m happy to announce that thanks to your support by way of votes, I was selected as a Top 10 Finalist.  I will go on to compete in the Finalist Competition at the LA Fitness Expo January 21-26.  This was a dream turned into reality thanks to the continued support from my brothers in iron.  I’ll definitely have some updates to share upon my return and am thrilled to be an ambassador for the “Adonis Lifestyle” on a national platform such as this.

Top 10 Finalist Have Been Chosen! Thanks for helping make this dream a reality.

“Top 10 Finalist Have Been Chosen! Thanks for helping make this dream a reality.” – Allen Elliott aka “Captain Healthy”

Wrapping up

Last but not least, we’ve got a surprise down the road for those of who have asked for some EXTRA accountability… more on that very soon.

Stay tuned, The year is young and we’re just getting started!

Establishing Lifestyle Patterns: Interview with AT11 Winner Oscar Ramirez

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Oscar Ramirez,  who placed  10th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Like many members of the AGR community, Oscar was excited to make a change and when the AT11 contest came around the corner, he deemed it the  perfect opportunity for him to enter.  Oscar had been following the program prior to the start of contest AT11.  However, he was still establishing a lifestyle pattern of how to best implement the AGR System.  Oscar shares with us  his “Adonis Origins” images.  See below:

“You only have to wait to the end of the day to satisfy a craving.”

What really got the wheels turning toward a successful transformation was intermittent fasting.  He found it best for him to fast throughout the day, having only a cup of coffee in the morning and then meals later in the evening.  At first, he received criticism for this practice, but those quickly turned into compliments as his physique began making dramatic improvements.

Oscar’s Transformation Essay:

My first challenge was injuring my shoulder at the end of the first week, which took about 4 weeks to heal. Finding alternate workouts, which would not put any stress on it, was not easy. Next, it was quite frustrating to see the scale fluctuate so much. I started a weekend at an ideal weight, and then on Monday was heavier again. It seemed I took 2 steps forward and 3 steps back. Also, lack of moral support was a bit of a downer at first. Some people said I was crazy for ‘starving’ myself and I was losing too much weight too fast and I was getting too skinny. The biggest challenge for me, however, was the eating. I had no problems during the fasting period, but when it was time to eat I found it quite difficult to stay below my recommended calorie intake. I love food, cooking and eating, so that’s been a major challenge all my life.
Fortunately, the accomplishments were far greater than the challenges. First, folks around me finally started to realize that my weight loss was healthy. They started commenting on how good I was looking. Several of them said I motivated them to get more serious about their diet/workout, just from seeing my results. Also, the scale eventually started going down so low that I can’t remember how long it’s been since I’ve been so light; probably early high school years. The biggest accomplishment for me was, however, the reflection in the mirror. It’s as if I’m looking at another/new man, not myself. I’m starting to see definition and muscles that I have never seen in my life. And, it’s not just me; my wife looks at me that way too. I feel and look amazing!

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Oscar,

Similar to another AT11 contestant you pushed through your injury and were able to successfully complete the concept.  It was interesting listening to your podcast as you discussed with John Barban about how you enjoyed cardio, yet prioritized the weight training ahead  as you knew that would be the greatest return on your investment.

It looks like your strategy combined with fasting and calorie management paid off!  You were able to take the tools of AGR and customize a lifestyle pattern that best  applied to you.

Congrats again on a successful transformation!

How to Build the Room of Improvement: Interview with AT11 Winner Henry Tom

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Henry Tom,  who placed  9th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.  Henry was active in fitness in his early 20’s.  He was an avid practitioner in Martial Arts.  However, when marriage and a new born baby entered his life, workouts and fitness was no longer a priority.  Henry wasn’t overly concerned as he didn’t think he was far off from the mark.

However, when attempts at weight loss became a struggle  for him in his 40’s he began looking for other solutions.  His initial trainers he worked with focused only on strength training, hardly mentioning nutrition.  He experience moderate levels of success when finally working with a trainer who placed emphasis on nutrition.  Little did he know, Henry was on his way to making a successful transformation.

Henry would later stumble upon AGR and found the combination of strength training and sound nutritional advice.  Remembering his prior success when he placed an emphasis on nutrition, Henry decided to enter contest AT11.  He was excited to start the contest when he realized that in order  to achieve his “Ideal” measurements there was room for improvement.

After twelve weeks of working out and eating with discipline, there’s been a change. The whole process has been transformative and educational, as I see how much I can achieve, and how much more I can do! It was worth the time, energy and effort in making life better!

EDITOR’S NOTE

Henry,

Kudos to you for battling through your injury to make a successful finish in contest AT11. For your valiant effort and staying the course your were able to earn a Top 10 spot in AT11.

Establishing A Golden Presence: Interview with AT11 Winner Jake Hahn

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Jake Hahn,  who placed  8th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Jake had picked up AGR a while back and decided to enter AT11 on a whim.  Drawing from inspiration of others, he decided to take the plunge and begin his “Adonis Transformational” Journey.  For Jake, the AGR system presented clearly, the  concepts of both “Science and Art” in regards to goal setting for an “Ideal” physique.  Similar to the concepts of Archery, he now had clear targets to shoot for when he entered the gym.

He was fascinated that the “visually appealing” look the AGR system provided was fully customizable to his body type.  In the interview, Jake mentions what it felt like to give his workouts a full 100% mental commitment.  He learned what it meant to establish a “Golden” presence.

“Presence is more than just being there.”  – Malcolm Forbes

Jake’s Transformation Essay:

I entered AT11 on a whim. A last minute decision brought on by a flash of inspiration. I wanted to experience for myself the motivation that the contests supplied for many passed contestants. So for me, having that deadline in the back of my mind truly was a solid push in the right direction. I found myself training harder and being more serious and committed to understanding what it truly takes to change a body for the better…I learned a lot!

In retrospect, before I found AGR all of my weight training and overall fitness ideas were extremely vague. I knew I wanted to look “good”, but I now know that I had no clue as to what that really meant. Which in turn has helped me to realize that without Adonis I probably never would have truly understood what I was/am after.

Ya know, without a definitive target, archery wouldn’t even exist. It would consist of a person shooting clumsily and  aimlessly into the air with no way to measure the growth of their skills. That’s how I now see my fitness past, and far too many people’s fitness present. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to be where I am, actually know where I am, know where I want to be, and most importantly HOW to get where I want to be!!

Throughout this short 12 week journey I have not only changed my shape in a positive way, I’ve changed my mindset and outlook. This is art. I’m molding myself. I love that! The Adonis team goes above and beyond what is expected from a company/business/people. They offer up amazing insights and LOTS of them!

During my last few weeks leading up to contest end I was personally coached by Adonis Ambassador Allen Elliott! I experienced that “above and beyond” guidance first hand and was truly honored and frankly blown away by the personal attention and care I received from Allen. He is truly a great coach, person, and example. Interacting with him was a solid inspiration for me, and I cannot thank him enough for his insight and support!

In closing I’ll just say this…I have never in my life been a part of a fitness community and training routine that I am so pleased with that I seriously cannot see myself living in any other way. Thank you for all that you’ve done and all that you continue to do. Cheers to the entire Adonis team…the epitome of above and beyond.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Jake,

It’s awesome that you had a strong support group behind you such as wife, family, and members of the adonis community.  I’m glad that I also had the opportunity to personally witness your transformation.

I believe competition brings out the best and worst in us.  Through ups and down’s of the contest you maintained that “Golden Presence” and didn’t lose sight of the goal.

Jake, the AT11 contest has made a positive impact in your life and you now realize the greater theme of AGR…. “It’s not a competition, it’s a lifestyle!”

We look forward to hearing more from you in the future about the progress you’ve made.

Congrats again on a successful transformation!
